Companies will want to know what the candidates base salary is if they receive any bonus, the average bonus amount, and any additional compensation or perks, such as 401k matching, stock grants or stock options, paid time off and how much they are required to pay towards their medical premiums. If you are expecting any further compensation, such as a sign on bonus, relocation assistance or green-card sponsorship as part of your decision to switch jobs, then that is something the company should know about up front. I am currently making $xyz but feel this is low compared to others with my background. Going forward I will be looking for annual compensation in the $abc range. If you are worried that your compensation is on the high side, you can let the employer kno w that the opportunity is as important to you as compensation. Saying I currently make $$$ but am flexible on my compensation requirements, depending on the position and the opportunity for career growth, tells the employer that you are not stuck on making a particular amount. Why Dont Employers Tell Us the sortiment? The answer really depends on the company. For many of companies, the position is opened at a particular level, but there is a huge amount of flexibility depending on what candidate we end up finding, as well as how that candidate compares to other team members. We may open a position up with an expected base salary of, say, $100,000, and then find that our best candidate only has 3 years of experience and, compared to others in the team, should really only be making $80,000. What about salary requirements or salary history letters? Some companies may still ask that you write out your salary history, or put your salary requirements in writing. Again, be honest with your answers. It is very easy to verify past compensation and falsifying information can be grounds for rescinding an offer or terminating your employment (if hired). Football is a way of life for millions of Americans, so of course youd hate to miss your next Super Bowl party unless it was because you were actually working at the biggest football game of the year. The good news is, you dont have to be a star quarterback or a bone-crushing linebacker to make it in the NFL. Career opportunities abound within the sport of football, from marketing to management and yes, even criminology-related fields. Believe it or not, you can work in criminal justice and be part of the action on Sundays in the fall. Job Functions and Work Environment The NFL secures the services of civilian contractors to provide all manner of services usually found in the criminal justice industry. The main goal is to ensure the safety of the NFL players, coaches, and staff, as well as the fans. Each NFL team is required under league rules to contract its own security team. The focus of these private security contractors is to protect the members of the team from potential threats. They also serve, in some cases, to protect the players from themselves. Players may also secure their own security agents, but the teams want to be sure that they protect their investment. One of the primary jobs of an NFL security contractor, then, is to keep the player out of trouble and out of the negative spotlight. While players have plenty of adoring fans, they also have their detractors. This is especially true when they are visiting a rival city. While the players are out and about, they may find themselves in positions where they need the protection and advice of an experienced security professional. Just like in every profession, its no secret that some NFL players have made some pretty public mistakes and participated in offensive behavior. The difference is that when an NFL player makes a big mistake off of the field, its often very public and very damaging to the player and to the team. A security specialist can help mitigate those incidents and hopefully prevent them all together in most cases. The job of an NFL security officer often includes: Ensuring the safety of NFL players and coachesTraveling with NFL teamsProviding driving services for players and coachesAdvising players and coachesInvestigating potential threats In short, NFL security agents are responsible for the overall protection of the physical well being of the players as well as their professional reputations. Education and Skill Requirements NFL security contractors are very often current or retired criminal justice professionals who have significant experience in the area of security and investigations. They are usually employed as police officers or detectives who perform double duty as security professionals in their off time. Experience in the field is most often required for people to be able to work in NFL security jobs. Those interested in working with the NFL in this capacity would do well to get specialized training in the are of dignitary protection. Job Growth and Salary Outlook NFL security officers are individual contractors and private investigators. They are most often affiliated with a local private investigative or security firm. In some instances, these firms may be comprised of a group of local police officers who contract their services out in their free time. NFL security agents do not receive a salary or benefits. Instead, they are paid an hourly rate. These rates are set by the individual contractor and are agreed to by the team. Rates for NFL security contractors can be $50 per hour or more, depending on the services provided. Working as an NFL Security Professional Working as a security agent for NFL players or teams can certainly be fun and rewarding, and may offer a lot of opportunities you might not otherwise get, such as going to the Super Bowl or being on the sidelines with your favorite team. At the same time, though, its a job, not a vacation. Long hours and travel may be involved. Additionally, because services are contracted out, you will likely need other sources of income or another job. Working as a security professional for the NFL may very well be an excellent source of supplemental income for those already working in criminal justice careers.

What#8217;s So Bad About Bowing to Customers, Clients, Guests and the Boss â€"A Cross-Cultural Analysis What#8217;s So Bad About Bowing to Customers, Clients, Guests and the Boss - A Cross-Cultural Analysis Instead of being commended for displaying cultural sensitivity and adaptability by bowing to Middle Eastern oil sheiks; former President of China, Hu Jin Tao; the Emperor of Japan, and, most recently, for bowing to a Japanese robot that was trundled over to meet him in Tokyo, he   is peppered with flak for bowing too deeply or for bowing at all. True, bows can be tricky: Bow too deeply and youll be seen as groveling, fawning, obsequious or generically weak; offer a nod instead of a bow and youll come across as arrogant, rude, insensitive or generically crass- that is, if you play the bow game at all. Opt out of the game and extend a hand instead? Very risky, depending on what culture you try that in. In the wrong one, you may end up watching your hand gingerly dangled from your squeamish counterparts fingertips like a soiled diaper. Time to Man Up as an Opinion Leader I always hope that presidents and prime ministers will play a more prominent role as what is called an opinion leader: some respected public figure who generates as well as well as expresses wise public opinion. For example, it would be nice to have a vigorous suggestion and appeal to Americans to abandon gang-banger gangsta and bank-gangster lifestyles for a more civil, civic persona that insists on being aware of and acting on ones obligations as much as on ones rights, in virtue of their in fact being morally, although evidently not psychologically, inseparable. OK. That may be asking for too much. But how about publicly recommending bowing- even if not as deep as the Nagasaki gas station attendants bow to a guy on a scooter in the photo I took there recently or his colleagues musketeer curtsy and sweeping arm flourish guiding a gas-filled one box car (cute boxy cars, as they are called in Japan) out the driveway onto the street. (By the way, the courtesy and friendliness of that attendant and his workmates were as deep as that bow. They never failed to greet me whenever I walked past- no matter how many times a day, which was a lot, given that my hotel was right next to their pumps. Ditto for whenever I asked for directions to some place or other.) To even consider importing the bow from Japan along with our electronics and seaweed, we would have to get over and end the monopoly of our handshake, which, of course is the quintessential, sacred embodiment of our anti-hierarchy, anti-subservient equalitarianism. Despite any disinclination to incline our spines, this may not be as hard to accomplish as one might imagine; after all, we are all expected to gush effusively over every stranger or neighbors baby, irrespective of our (lack of ) interest in or enthusiasm for it or babies in general. So, if we expect presidents to kiss strange babies, why berate them for bowing? The latter, as a display of respect, is, in general, no less deserved than the average toddler snog. Respect vs. Trust A useful first step is to distinguish the bow as a display of respect from displays of trust- which, fundamentally, is what a handshake is and has been since its adoption as proof neither party is armed or in a position to strangle the other. Perhaps this is why retail clerks and customers dont shake hands, viz., they dont really trust each other, what with shoplifting, crafty upselling and bait-and-switch pricing. Notice that a customer-merchant handshake typically signals the sealing of a deal- i.e., an offer and acceptance of trust and faith that what has been promised will be delivered by both parties. So, currently, what with the retail and office bow being too obsequious and the handshake being largely irrelevant (apart from sealing big deals or as an opening ritual to convey mostly trust or at best dilute respect), customers and those who serve them part with prescribed smiles. The Smile as an Alternative to a Bow or Handshake As for the evolution of the smile, sociobiologists and ethologists claim it evolved as a tame display of teeth to communicate that although the hardware for a hard bite is clearly visible, there is no matching intent to use it. It is important to note that in these comments, Professor Guthrie clearly provides confirmation of the interpretation of “handshake as trust” (as opposed to the respect function of a bow). As R.D. Guthrie, sociobiologist/ethologist and author of one of my favorite books, Body Hot Spots: the Anatomy of Human Social Organs and Behavior, (extensively cited in my recent article about why beards are back), explained it in that analytical overview, Many mammals have what is known as a wide-mouthed greeting-face where the corners of the mouth are pulled backward and upward to reveal all the teeth a gesture much different from a snarl. Ethologists have interpreted this as See, here are my weapons, but they wont be used against you (as in presenting ones hand to be shaken in a gesture of friendship)- I could hurt you with this, but instead it is being presented in a non-offensive way. We have ritualized this in the military presentation of arms and the discharge of weapons as salutes. (Boldface for emphasis is mine.) It is important to note that in these comments, Professor Guthrie clearly provides confirmation of the interpretation of “handshake as trust” (as opposed to the respect function of a bow). An infants toothless grin and adult closed-mouth smiles, on the other hand, can be interpreted as even less threatening, since the teeth, like a saber in its sheath, are not revealed or, in the former case, the sheath is empty. Again, like the handshake, it seems that the principle purpose of the greeting or parting smile and its primeval primate antecedents is to communicate a no threat message, rather than one of respect or submission. Demanding the Most, But   Supplying   the Least Respect As an observational aside, I cant resist noting that It seems very odd, to say the least, that a culture- ours- in which everyone wants respect from strangers is also one in which too many of us offer it grudgingly, if at all. The extreme icon of this is the thug in the hood who will shoot strangers for seemingly dissin him, yet will never show them or anyone respect or courtesy, unless they are clearly more powerful. Once again, a terrible imbalance of rights against obligations rears its unbowed head. Bogus Resistance to Bowing Predictable resistance to the diffusion of bowing in Western culture will include the argument that unless bows are perfectly calibrated to be equal in angle and duration, the inferiority or submission of one participant to the other will be communicated and therefore established. To this is added the expectation that such perfect synchronization of bows is unlikely and that somebody is going to, in effect, lord it over or otherwise seem superior to someone else when bows are exchanged. Sorry, but I cant bow to that logic. The reason is that a parallel argument could have been offered at the inception of the handshake: But if we shake hands and one of us squeezes harder than the other, or pumps more vigorously or holds the others hand longer or more briefly than desired- well, that could create interpersonal havoc; for example, as a communicated attempt to confirm or create dominance! To these maneuvers and misfires should be added the alpha-male trick of having yourself, as president, photographed on the right of Putin or whomever you are shaking hands with. In that position, your hand will be visible as being above and atop the palm of your counterpart, thereby subliminally suggesting that you are primus inter pares- first among equals and more dominant. Apparently, U.S. presidents have been very adept at this. The point is that although these mishaps, miscommunications and gambits are possible, they are generally and easily avoided, because everybody knows the rules and the etiquette. So why not simply standardize the bow in the same way we standardize the handshake, while shaking our heads at the rule-breakers? We dont attend charm school to learn how to shake hands; we simply learn it through cultural osmosis. Hence, we could do the same with the bow: Standardize it to no more, no less than the Japanese-prescribed 15 degrees (for standard, decorous respect) and 3 seconds- thereby saving the baby of equalitarianism without throwing out the bath water of respect. As for trust, that can be assured by adding one more rule to the protocols of bowing. Throw in some rejections to the process and our egos can be left feeling bruised and prevent us from taking advantage of new opportunities. What might not have been right then, could certainly be the right fit now, but only under certain circumstances. Here are a few instances when you should definitely push yourself to re-apply for a job if you see it reposted after a few months have passed: Scenario #1 You’ve done a deep dive into all your professional documents and rebranded yourself for the position (Think: LinkedIn, cover letter, and resume). If you’ve given your professional documents a facelift and feel you’ve done a better job at articulating your career highlights, then you might increase the chances of your resume getting through the initial screening phase. Perhaps you forgot to attach a cover letter on the last round of applications or never completed the application form. In this situation, you should definitely re-apply. Best practice: When applying for a job, make sure your cover letter, resume, and LinkedIn are up to date and tailored as much as possible. These documents should tell a cohesive story about who you are and easily showcase what you’re about, as a recruiter will spend 6 seconds on average viewing your resume. If you’re not getting traction with your current set of professional documents, consider hiring professional help! Scenario #2 When you initially applied, the job had already been posted for 1-2 weeks. Job applications for large organization receive on average 200-300 resumes per position and can often see up to 600 applicants. If your resume was number 200 in the pile, chances are a recruiter never laid eyes on it. Best practice: When re-applying for the job, try connecting with someone in the organization who can help flag your resume in the system or connect directly with a recruiter. Don’t leave it up to the fate of the applicant tracking system! Career expert and Talent Acquisition Manager, Amanda Fulginiti, says that “Job hunting is a volume game. Don’t submit and pray.” Look for the backdoor into an organization, make meaningful connections, and get your resume into the hands of the right people. Scenario #3 You’ve gained new experiences and growth within your current role. You may have made it past a few rounds of interviews. The hiring managers loved you, unfortunately, they also loved another candidate who had more experience. Fast forward to the future where you’ve seen significant growth in your role, expanded your responsibilities, and added new skills to your toolbox . If you see the same job posted and it still piques your interest, you should definitely re-apply!       Best practice : Take initiative by speaking to individuals in your roles of interest and get insight into the skills you should be developing to strengthen your profile. This shows that you are resourceful and willing to put yourself out there. Scenario #4 A job was posted, you applied, were denied, but a more junior role like the first was posted. If you’ve been rejected from a position, but a similar job shows up at a more junior level, you could definitely still apply depending on why you were initially rejected. As long as the job is a logical step forward professionally, it could still be a great opportunity. Given that you know there is a more senior role in that department, there is a clear opportunity for growth. Best practice: Make sure to always keep a professional and transparent relationship with the recruiters you are working with, even if they are delivering bad news. By remaining professional, you keep the lines of communication open for future opportunities. There are of course times that you will get rejected because you are not a fit , this is not something to be offended by. You might be a great person with a great set of chops, but for any reason the hiring managers didn’t feel that you would elevate their team. In this situation, there is not much you can do! However, career growth involves getting out there, showing your grit, and knocking on the right doors, rather than waiting for that dream job to appear. Though our fear of rejection might hold us back, we could benefit from checking our ego at the door when it comes to re-applying for a job. In the worst of situations, you’ve lost an hour of your life filling out an application. In the best-case scenario, a new recruiter may come across your profile and think you’re a great fit. Job hunting takes tenacity, and a whole lot of mental power. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a race!

But in reality, it often does.Optimistic versus pessimisticWith that in mind, they ran a series of experiments.  The team built a computer mo del that cycled through 1,000 simulated projects, some which ignored deadline uncertainty and some which recognized it and re-allocated resources as necessary.“A deadline is just another stakeholder requirement and we all know that stakeholder requirements hold a certain amount of uncertainty,” said study co-author Robert Bordley, a professor at University of Michigan College of Engineering. “We can’t eliminate that uncertainty, but we can often quantify it. And I’ve found that the value of doing that is very big.”Managers should sit down with stakeholders and ask for more than just the “optimistic” and “pessimistic” dates for completion. They have to ask for the real reasoning behind those dates, so they know if and why they have flexibility on the deadlines.“Stakeholders are always dealing with a complex set of uncertainties, but they are rarely shared with project managers. The goal is to bring the two worlds closer together and incorporate the knowledge tha t’s uncovered into the management process,” Bordley said. “I like to ask stakeholders to think of a situation that would cause a deadline to get pushed forward by a month, for example. Tell me about that situation, estimate how likely it is to happen. Focus on the extremes. That way, you end up with optimistic and pessimistic deadlines that are more than just numbers.”Once a manager knows the optimistic and pessimistic deadlines, they must express their level of uncertainty with the deadline within the project.
